SeaWiFS
SeaWiFS, or the Sea-Viewing Wide Field-of-View Sensor, is a satellite-based instrument launched in 1997 to monitor Earth's oceans. It captures images of ocean colors, which helps scientists measure phytoplankton levels—tiny plants that form the foundation of the marine food web. By analyzing these colors, SeaWiFS provides valuable data on ocean health, marine ecosystems, and climate change. The information gathered has improved our understanding of ocean biology and has assisted in fisheries management and environmental monitoring. Its mission lasted until 2010, but its data continues to be vital for researchers studying the world's oceans.
