Santal Rebellion

The Santal Rebellion, occurring from 1855 to 1856 in India, was a significant uprising by the Santal tribal community against British colonial authorities and local landlords. The Santals, unhappy with oppressive taxation, land appropriation, and exploitation, sought to establish their rights and autonomy. This movement was marked by a combination of social and religious elements, with leaders like Birsa Munda emerging to unify the Santals. Although the rebellion was ultimately suppressed, it highlighted the struggles of indigenous populations against colonial powers and laid the groundwork for future tribal movements in India.
