Respiratory distress syndrome

Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is a serious condition that affects breathing, primarily in newborns, especially those born prematurely. It occurs when the lungs aren’t fully developed and lack a substance called surfactant, which helps keep the air sacs open. This causes difficulty in breathing, leading to low oxygen levels. Symptoms include rapid breathing and grunting sounds. RDS can be managed with treatments like oxygen therapy and surfactant replacement. With timely medical intervention, many infants recover and go on to live healthy lives.
