Neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome

Neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome (NRDS) is a condition commonly seen in premature babies. It occurs when their lungs are not fully developed, leading to difficulty breathing. This is often due to a lack of surfactant, a substance that helps keep the air sacs in the lungs open. Symptoms include rapid breathing, grunting sounds, and a bluish tint to the skin. Treatment may involve providing oxygen, ventilators, or surfactant replacement therapy. With timely medical care, many infants recover well, but NRDS can pose serious health risks if not addressed promptly.
