Reductionism and Emergentism

Reductionism is the idea that complex systems can be understood by examining their simplest, most fundamental parts. Emergentism, on the other hand, argues that some properties in a system can only be understood as a whole and are not merely the sum of their parts, exhibiting new characteristics that aren't predictable from understanding the individual components.
