Pregnancy Discrimination Act
The Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA), enacted in 1978, is a U.S. law that prohibits discrimination against women due to pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions. It requires employers to treat pregnancy-related conditions the same as any other temporary disability regarding benefits, leave, and job accommodations. This means that if an employer offers sick leave or benefits for other health issues, they must also provide the same for pregnancy. The PDA ensures that women are not disadvantaged in the workplace because of their pregnancy status, promoting equal treatment and protecting their rights during and after pregnancy.
