Poona Pact

The Poona Pact, established in 1932, was an agreement between Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar concerning the political representation of the depressed classes (or untouchables) in India. Following the British proposal for separate electorates for these groups, Gandhi opposed it, fearing it would further divide society. The pact ultimately allowed for reserved seats for the depressed classes in legislatures, while maintaining a joint electorate for them and other communities. This compromise aimed to ensure political voice for marginalized groups without fostering division, reflecting both Gandhi's and Ambedkar's commitment to social justice.
