Pike and shot

Pike and shot refers to a military formation used primarily in the 16th to 18th centuries, combining two types of soldiers: pikemen and musketeers. Pikemen wield long spears (pikes) to defend against cavalry and engage in close combat, while musketeers use firearms for ranged attacks. This combination allowed armies to be more versatile, as the pikes protected the musketeers as they fired their weapons. The formation significantly influenced warfare, making it more organized and effective during that era, particularly in battles involving infantry engagements.
