Nonproliferation Treaty
The Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) is an international agreement aimed at preventing the spread of nuclear weapons. Signed in 1968, it has three main goals: to promote disarmament, prevent the spread of nuclear weapons, and encourage peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Countries that already have nuclear weapons (like the U.S. and Russia) commit to reducing their arsenals, while those without them agree not to develop them. The treaty has helped create a framework for nuclear nonproliferation and has been signed by over 190 countries, making it one of the most widely accepted arms control agreements in history.
