Nail fungus
Nail fungus, or onychomycosis, is an infection caused by fungi that affect the nails, usually on the toes. It leads to thickening, discoloration, and brittleness of the nails, and can sometimes cause discomfort. The infection can spread easily, especially in warm, moist environments like public showers or swimming pools. Risk factors include diabetes, a weakened immune system, and poor circulation. Treatment options vary from topical antifungal creams to oral medications, but may take time to be effective. Prevention includes keeping nails clean and dry, and wearing breathable footwear.
