Montfortian rebels

The Montfortian rebels were a group of English barons and nobles in the 13th century who opposed the rule of King Henry III. Led by Simon de Montfort, they sought to reform the monarchy and address grievances regarding royal authority and taxation. Their struggle culminated in the Second Barons' War (1264-1267), which aimed to limit the king's power and increase the influence of the barons and common people in governance. The conflict ultimately ended in defeat for the rebels, but it laid important groundwork for the development of parliamentary democracy in England.
