Montagu-Chelmsford Reforms
The Montagu-Chelmsford Reforms, introduced in 1919 by British officials Edwin Montagu and Lord Chelmsford, aimed to address growing demands for Indian self-governance. These reforms expanded the legislative councils and allowed for limited Indian participation in governance. The Government of India Act 1919 established a dual government system, with some powers shared between British authorities and Indian leaders. While it aimed to increase political representation, many Indians felt it fell short of true self-rule and led to further demands for independence. The reforms marked a significant step in India's journey toward self-governance.
