Lord Chelmsford (Frederick William Lord Chelmsford)

Frederick William Lord Chelmsford was a British Army officer and colonial administrator, born in 1838. He is best known for his leadership during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-1880), where as commander-in-chief in India, he faced challenges in military strategy and logistics. His most notable (and controversial) moment was the Battle of Kandahar in 1880, which helped re-establish British control. Chelmsford's career was marked by his service in India and Africa, and he was later appointed as Governor of New South Wales. His legacy is mixed, recognized for his military service but also criticized for setbacks during the Afghan conflict.
