Home Rule Movement
The Home Rule Movement refers to the campaign, primarily in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, advocating for self-governance in Ireland. Supporters aimed for Ireland to gain more control over its own affairs while remaining part of the United Kingdom. It was rooted in the desire for political, social, and economic autonomy, as many felt distant British rule did not address Ireland's needs effectively. Key figures, like Charles Stewart Parnell, championed this cause. Ultimately, the movement laid the groundwork for the eventual establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922.
