Meech Lake Accord

The Meech Lake Accord was a proposed set of constitutional reforms in Canada, introduced in 1987. Its main goal was to persuade Quebec to endorse the Constitution Act of 1982 by recognizing Quebec as a "distinct society" and granting it greater autonomy. The agreement also aimed to strengthen provincial powers and enhance the role of provinces in various governmental decisions. However, the accord faced significant opposition and failed to be ratified by several provinces by the 1990 deadline, leading to ongoing discussions about Quebec's status and the relationship between federal and provincial governments in Canada.
