Lluís Companys

Lluís Companys (1882-1940) was a prominent Catalan politician and leader of the Catalonia region during a tumultuous period in Spanish history. He served as the President of the Generalitat de Catalunya, the autonomous government of Catalonia, during the Spanish Civil War. Companys was a staunch advocate for Catalan independence and democratic rights. After the war, he was captured by Franco's regime, tried, and executed in 1940. His legacy is significant in both Catalan nationalism and Spanish history, symbolizing the struggle for regional autonomy and democratic ideals against authoritarianism.
