Lluís Companys i Jover was a prominent Catalan politician and lawyer who served as President of Catalonia from 1934 to 1940. He was a key figure in advocating for Catalan autonomy and identity during a tumultuous period in Spain's history. Firmly committed to democracy, he led efforts to promote Catalan culture and self-governance. During the Spanish Civil War, he was a symbol of regional resistance. After the war, he was captured by Spanish forces, imprisoned, and ultimately executed in 1940 under Franco’s dictatorship, becoming a martyr for Catalan nationalism.
