José María Morelos

José María Morelos was a key leader in the Mexican War of Independence against Spanish rule in the early 19th century. Born in 1765, he was a Catholic priest who became a military commander and strategist after the death of Miguel Hidalgo, another independence leader. Morelos is known for organizing and leading forces in various campaigns, advocating for social reforms, and drafting important documents like the "Sentiments of the Nation," which outlined his vision for an independent Mexico. His leadership significantly advanced the independence movement until his capture and execution in 1815, marking him as a national hero in Mexican history.
