Father of Mexican Independence
The "Father of Mexican Independence" is Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Catholic priest who led the initial uprising against Spanish rule in 1810. Inspired by Enlightenment ideas and a desire for social justice, he issued the "Grito de Dolores," calling Mexicans to fight for independence. His leadership sparked the Mexican War of Independence, which ultimately resulted in Mexico gaining independence from Spain in 1821. Hidalgo's courage and leadership made him a national hero and symbol of Mexico's fight for freedom.
