James Marcia

James Marcia is a developmental psychologist best known for his theory of identity development during adolescence. He proposed that teens go through a process of exploring different roles and beliefs to form a sense of identity. Marcia identified four identity statuses: identity diffusion (lack of commitment and exploration), identity foreclosure (commitment without exploration), identity moratorium (active exploration without commitment), and identity achievement (commitment following exploration). His work helps us understand how individuals navigate their identities and make choices about their values, beliefs, and future directions during this critical life stage.
