Graft-vs-Host Disease
Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a medical condition that can occur after a bone marrow or stem cell transplant. In this process, donor cells are introduced to a recipient. Sometimes, these donor immune cells recognize the recipient’s body as foreign and attack it, leading to inflammation and damage. GVHD can manifest in various ways, including skin rashes, liver problems, and gastrointestinal issues. It varies in severity, from mild to life-threatening, and can occur shortly after the transplant or even months later. Preventive treatments and careful matching of donor and recipient help reduce the risk of GVHD.
