Facial nerve (CN VII)

The facial nerve, also known as cranial nerve VII, is a vital nerve in the head that controls the muscles of facial expression, allowing us to smile, frown, and make other facial movements. It also carries sensations from parts of the face, such as taste from the front part of the tongue. Additionally, it helps with functions like tear production and saliva secretion. Damage to the facial nerve can lead to weakness or paralysis on one side of the face, commonly seen in conditions like Bell's palsy. Its proper functioning is essential for both expression and sensation.
