Epistemic Regress

Epistemic regress refers to the challenge of justifying our beliefs. When we try to prove a belief, we often rely on another belief for support, leading to an endless chain of needing further justification. In coherentism, the idea is that our beliefs are justified by their connections to other beliefs within a system, rather than needing a single, foundational belief. This means that rather than an infinite regress, beliefs can support each other in a web, together forming a coherent understanding of reality without needing to reach an ultimate justification.
