Enryaku-ji

Enryaku-ji is a historic temple complex located on Mount Hiei in Japan, near Kyoto. Established in the late 8th century by the monk Saicho, it is the head temple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism. Enryaku-ji is significant for its beautiful architecture, extensive grounds, and its role in the development of Japanese Buddhism. The temple has been a center for religious training, scholarly study, and pilgrimage. In 1994, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its cultural and spiritual importance throughout Japanese history. Its serene mountain setting adds to its spiritual significance.
