T’ien-t’ai (Tendai)
T’ien-t’ai, also known as Tendai in Japan, is a school of Mahayana Buddhism founded in the 6th century by the monk Zhiyi. It emphasizes the interconnectedness of life and the importance of meditation and wisdom. T’ien-t’ai teaches that all phenomena are empty of inherent existence and that enlightenment can be attained through understanding the nature of reality. Central to its practice is the Lotus Sutra, which conveys that everyone has the potential for Buddhahood. T’ien-t’ai combines various Buddhist teachings and emphasizes a comprehensive approach to spiritual practice, integrating meditation, study, and moral conduct.
