Dutch Elm Disease

Dutch Elm Disease is a serious condition that affects elm trees, caused by a fungal infection spread by bark beetles. The disease disrupts the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients, leading to wilting, yellowing leaves, and eventually death. It first appeared in the Netherlands in the early 20th century and has since spread globally, devastating elm populations. Once a common shade tree, elms are now rare in many areas due to this disease. Prevention includes removing infected trees and controlling beetle populations, though there is no cure once a tree is infected.
