Ulmus (elm)

Ulmus, commonly known as elm, is a genus of deciduous trees and shrubs valued for their tall, spreading canopies and attractive, asymmetrical leaves. These trees are widely found in temperate regions and are appreciated for their shade and aesthetic appeal. Elms have a distinctive textured bark and produce clusters of small, wind-pollinated flowers in spring. Historically important as street and park trees, many elm populations were devastated by Dutch elm disease—an fungal pathogen spread by beetles—leading to significant declines. Efforts continue to develop resistant varieties and preserve these historic and ecological trees.
