Ophiostoma novo-ulmi

Ophiostoma novo-ulmi is a fungus that causes Dutch elm disease, a serious illness affecting elm trees. It is spread mainly by bark beetles that carry the spores from infected trees to healthy ones. The fungus blocks the tree’s water transport system, leading to wilting, yellowing, and ultimately the death of the tree. This disease has significantly impacted elm populations worldwide, especially in North America and Europe. Managing and controlling the spread involves removing infected trees and trapping or controlling the beetle populations to protect healthy elms.
