Dionysius Exiguus
Dionysius Exiguus was a 6th-century monk and scholar known for creating the Anno Domini (AD) dating system, which counts years from the birth of Jesus Christ. This system was introduced because earlier calendars were based on Roman and other local traditions, which varied. Dionysius aimed to provide a consistent way to track time for the Christian community. His work laid the foundation for the modern Gregorian calendar, which is widely used today. Although some of his calculations regarding the year of Jesus's birth are debated, his influence on timekeeping remains significant in history.
