Byzantine calendar
The Byzantine calendar is a historical calendar used by the Eastern Orthodox Church, primarily in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. It was based on the older Julian calendar but added 5508 or 5509 years to align with the biblical creation date, effectively making the year 5508 or 5509 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar in use today. For example, the year 2024 CE corresponds to 7521 or 7522 in the Byzantine calendar. This calendar is mainly used for liturgical purposes and religious commemorations, maintaining traditional calculations in the Eastern Orthodox Church.
