Cretaceous period
The Cretaceous Period, which lasted from about 145 to 66 million years ago, is the final and longest segment of the Mesozoic Era. It is known for the diversification of dinosaurs and the emergence of flowering plants. This period saw various climates and geological changes, with landmasses shifting and sea levels rising and falling. The Cretaceous ended with a mass extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact, which wiped out many species, including most dinosaurs. This event paved the way for mammals and birds to rise in the subsequent Cenozoic Era.
