Charles the Bald

Charles the Bald was a 9th-century king and member of the Carolingian dynasty, known for his rule over West Francia and later as Holy Roman Emperor. Born in 823, he was a grandson of Charlemagne, the famous emperor who united much of Western Europe. Following Charlemagne's death, his empire was divided among his grandsons, including Charles. He is significant for his efforts to maintain and govern the fragmented territories, as well as for his patronage of the arts and learning, fostering a cultural revival during a turbulent period in European history. Charles died in 877.
