Carlos Manuel de Céspedes

Carlos Manuel de Céspedes (1819-1874) was a key figure in Cuba’s struggle for independence from Spanish rule. He is best known for launching the Ten Years' War in 1868 by declaring Cuba’s independence and freeing his slaves, which framed the fight as one for liberty and justice. Céspedes served as the leader of the revolutionary movement and is often referred to as the "Father of the Cuban Revolution." His vision influenced future generations of Cuban nationalists, though the struggle for independence continued long after his death, culminating in eventual victory in 1898.
