1868 Grito de Yara

The Grito de Yara in 1868 was a pivotal event marking the start of Cuba's fight for independence from Spanish rule. Led by José Martí and others, it was a rebellion sparked by economic hardship, political repression, and the desire for self-determination. The uprising began in the town of Yara and signaled Cuba's broad resistance movement. Although initially suppressed, it laid the groundwork for later, larger independence efforts, culminating in Cuba's eventual freedom in 1898. This event is celebrated as the beginning of Cuban national liberation.
