Cachexia

Cachexia is a serious syndrome characterized by extreme weight loss, muscle wasting, and fatigue, often seen in patients with chronic illnesses like cancer, heart failure, or HIV/AIDS. It occurs when the body’s metabolism is altered, leading to a significant loss of appetite and the body breaking down its own tissues for energy. This condition can severely affect a person’s quality of life and ability to recover from illness, as it reduces strength and overall health. Unlike simple malnutrition, cachexia is driven by underlying disease processes and isn't easily reversed by nutrition alone.
