Benin Bronzes

The Benin Bronzes are a collection of plaques and sculptures that originated from the Kingdom of Benin, in present-day Nigeria. Created between the 13th and 19th centuries, these artworks were crafted from bronze, ivory, and other materials, depicting historical events, figures, and cultural traditions of the Benin people. After a British military expedition in 1897, many of these works were taken to Europe, leading to ongoing debates about their rightful ownership and the impact of colonialism. The Benin Bronzes are now considered significant cultural artifacts, representing the richness of African history and artistry.
