Kingdom of Benin
The Kingdom of Benin was a powerful and sophisticated West African empire that thrived from around the 13th century until the late 19th century, centered in what is now Nigeria. Known for its advanced governance, rich art, and elaborate bronze sculptures called the Benin Bronzes, the kingdom was highly organized with a monarch called the Oba. It engaged in extensive trade and diplomacy, maintaining strong cultural traditions. British invasions in 1897 led to the fall of the kingdom, but its artistic legacy remains influential and celebrated worldwide.
