Battle of Pylos

The Battle of Pylos occurred in 425 BCE during the Peloponnesian War, a conflict between Athens and Sparta. Athenian forces, led by the general Demosthenes, seized a strategic position at Pylos, a coastal area in southwestern Greece. The Spartans responded aggressively, attempting to retake the area. However, the Athenians successfully defended their outpost, leading to a significant Spartan defeat. This battle was notable for the capture of many Spartan soldiers on the nearby island of Sphacteria, boosting Athenian morale and influencing the war's dynamics by demonstrating that Sparta was not invincible.
