Aurelian Walls

The Aurelian Walls are ancient fortifications built between AD 271 and 275 in Rome, Italy, under Emperor Aurelian. These massive walls were designed to protect the city from invasions and covered about 19 kilometers (12 miles). They include gates, towers, and bastions, showcasing impressive engineering for their time. Originally, the walls enclosed a larger area than the previous defenses, allowing for the city's expansion. Today, parts of the Aurelian Walls still stand and serve as a historical landmark, reflecting Rome's significance and the challenges it faced in antiquity.
