X-ray binaries

X-ray binaries are systems in space where two stars orbit each other, one of which is a compact object like a black hole or neutron star. The compact star pulls material from its companion star, creating an accretion disk, where the infalling gas becomes superheated and emits X-rays. These X-rays can be detected by telescopes, allowing scientists to study these powerful and energetic environments. X-ray binaries help us understand extreme physics, the life cycles of stars, and the nature of black holes and neutron stars.
