War Refugee Board

The War Refugee Board (WRB) was established by the U.S. government in 1944 during World War II to aid victims of the Holocaust and other wartime atrocities. It aimed to rescue and provide relief to as many refugees as possible, especially Jews facing persecution in Nazi-occupied Europe. The board coordinated efforts with international organizations and private relief groups, facilitating immigration, funding, and support. Although it was created late in the war, the WRB played a crucial role in saving thousands of lives by helping refugees escape danger and find safety in the United States and elsewhere.
