USSR-Afghanistan relations
USSR-Afghanistan relations were largely defined by the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, intended to support a communist government amidst rising resistance from Islamic factions. This intervention escalated into a protracted conflict, known as the Soviet-Afghan War, which lasted until 1989. The USSR aimed to expand its influence in Central Asia, but faced strong opposition from Afghan guerrillas, known as the Mujahideen, supported by the U.S. and other countries. The war drained resources and ultimately contributed to the USSR's collapse, significantly impacting regional dynamics and contributing to ongoing instability in Afghanistan.
