United Provinces of the Netherlands
The United Provinces of the Netherlands, often known as the Dutch Republic, existed from the late 16th century until the late 18th century. It formed when seven northern provinces broke away from Spanish rule during the Eighty Years' War, seeking independence. This republic was notable for its significant economic prosperity, maritime power, and cultural achievements during the Dutch Golden Age. Governed by a decentralized system, it had political and religious tolerance, which attracted diverse populations. The United Provinces eventually became part of the modern Netherlands after being incorporated into the Batavian Republic following the French Revolution in the late 18th century.
