Ulgulan (The Great Rebellion)
Ulgulan, or The Great Rebellion, refers to a significant uprising led by the Santhal tribe in India during 1855-1856 against British colonial rule and local feudal lords. The Santhals, facing exploitation and loss of their land, sought to reclaim their rights and autonomy. They were motivated by grievances over oppressive taxation, forced labor, and cultural suppression. The rebellion saw fierce fighting and was marked by a strong sense of community and identity among the Santhals. Although it was ultimately suppressed, Ulgulan highlighted the struggles against colonialism and the quest for justice among marginalized groups in India.
