1916 Rebellion

The 1916 Rebellion, also known as the Easter Rising, was an armed uprising in Ireland aimed at ending British rule and establishing an independent Irish republic. On Easter Monday, Irish republicans, mostly members of known revolutionary groups, seized key locations in Dublin. Despite being short-lived—lasting about a week—the rebellion galvanized public support for independence. It led to significant political changes and laid the groundwork for Ireland’s eventual independence. Though initially controversial, the rebellion is now seen as a pivotal moment in Ireland’s path to self-governance.
