Treaty of Sligo
The Treaty of Sligo, signed in 1587, was an agreement between the English Crown and Irish chieftains, aimed at establishing a peaceful relationship and promoting stability in Ireland. It followed a period of unrest and conflicts, particularly in Connacht. The treaty sought to define land rights, protect the local population's interests, and allow for a certain degree of self-governance while asserting English authority. However, it ultimately failed to bring lasting peace, as tensions between the Irish and English continued, leading to further conflicts in the following years.
