The Tohoku earthquake and tsunami occurred on March 11, 2011, off the northeastern coast of Japan. It was a powerful 9.0 magnitude earthquake, one of the strongest ever recorded. The quake triggered a massive tsunami, with waves reaching heights of up to 40 meters (130 feet), devastating coastal towns.
