Tsunamigenic earthquakes are powerful quakes that cause large ocean waves called tsunamis. They usually occur beneath the ocean, when the earth's crust shifts suddenly, displacing a massive volume of water. The energy released sends waves traveling across the sea at high speeds. When these waves reach shallow coastlines, they grow taller and can cause significant destruction.
