Science of Tsunamis
Tsunamis are large ocean waves typically caused by underwater earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or landslides. When an ocean floor suddenly shifts, it displaces a massive amount of water, creating waves that can travel at high speeds across the ocean. As these waves approach shallow coastal areas, they slow down and increase in height, often resulting in destructive surges. Unlike regular waves, which are caused by wind, tsunamis involve the entire water column, making them much more powerful and capable of causing significant damage when they reach shore. Early detection systems are crucial for minimizing risks to coastal communities.
