Tohoku Earthquake
The Tohoku Earthquake, also known as the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, was a powerful magnitude 9.0 undersea earthquake off the northeastern coast of Japan. It occurred due to tectonic plate movements where the Pacific Plate was subducting beneath the North American Plate. The sudden release of energy caused a massive tsunami, with waves exceeding 40 meters in height, devastating coastal areas. This event caused extensive damage, loss of life, and triggered a nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant. It underscored the need for improved seismic preparedness and advance warning systems in earthquake-prone regions.
